The shortest route to Kuhmo from the south runs through Nurmes, along the main road 75. It is possible to travel to Kuhmo via Kajaani, taking first highway 5 to Kajaani and further onwards to Kuhmo on the main road 76. Heading from Oulu, the shortest route leads through Paltamo and Kontionmäki to Kaitainsalmi and from there along the so-called north side road to Kuhmo (roads 899, 9000, 900).
