From Helsinki 590 km via Kuopio, Siilinjärvi and Nurmes. From Oulu 260 km via Paltamo, Kontionmäki and Sotkamo. From Kajaani 105 km.

Vartius

International border crossing between Kuhmo and the Karelian Republic of Russia. Sights on the other side of the border include the town of Kostamus and the villages of Vuokkiniemi, Venehjärvi, Uhtua and Jyskyjärvi, which were important sources of epic that served as basis of Kalevala.

There are bus services between Kuhmo and Kostamus on Mondays and Fridays, with return the same day. Tourists must have a passport and visa to cross the border.
