Ensimmäinen European Oral Singin Traditions -hankkeen esiselvitysmatka suuntautui Skotlantiin ja Irlantiin 27.1.–3.2.2011. Hankkeen johtaja Pekka Huttu-Hiltunen tapasi Edinburgin yliopiston tutkijoita ja henkilökuntaa 28.–30.1 sekä 2.–3.2., ja esitteli heille hanketta. Matkan skottilaisena isäntänä oli tohtori John Shaw, Edinburghin yliopiston School of Scottish Studies -laitoksesta.
Edinburghissa monet tutkijat olivat kiinnostuneita olemaan mukana hankkeen tutkimuksellisessa osiossa. Vierailun aikana oltiin myös yhteydessä paikallisiin aluekehitysviranomaisiin ja saatiin heiltä yhteystietoja mahdollisista Leander-toimintaryhmistä, joille hankesuunnitelmassa kuvattu toimintamalli sopisi. Hankkeen esittely julkaistiin myös Skotlannin aluekehitysviranomaisten verkkosivuilla.

Ensimmäisen esiselvitysmatkan aikana hankkeen johtaja Pekka Huttu-Hiltunen matkusti Edinburghista Corkiin Dublinin kautta. Siellä hän vieraili mm. Viikinkimuseossa, jossa oli näyttely viikinkien vaikutuksesta Dublinissa. Oheiset informaatiotaulut ovat mielenkiintoisia myös runolauluntutkimuksen kannalta, koska ne konkreettisesti osoittavat, miksi runolaulusta kannattaa käyttää genrenimityksenä englanninkielisenäkin runosong-termiä, eikä runic song, tai varsinkaan rune song –termiä. Jälkimmäisissä tapauksissa on ilmeistä että perinne helposti sekoitetaan viikinkien ruuni-kirjoitukseen, joita kaiverrettiin puuhun, kiviin, metalliin ja luuhun. Sillä, että mahdollisesti lauluissa on samoja aiheita, ei tässä yhteydessä ole merkitystä. Tärkeätä on, että kahta eri kulttuuriin liittyvää laulutapaa ei sekoiteta keskenään.
Mielenkiintoinen oli myös viikinkien lauluperinteen esitteleminen. Kirjatuissa skaldien laulujen tyylipiirteissä on melko paljon yhteistä runolauluperinteen kanssa.

Huttu-Hiltunen vieraili kuun vaihteessa myös Corkin yliopistossa. Vierailun isäntänä oli tohtori Juniper Hill. Huttu-Hiltunen piti yliopistolla luennon runolauluperinteestä, sen keruusta ja tutkimuksesta, sekä EOST-hankkeesta. Kuulijoina oli noin 40 tutkijaa ja jatko-opiskelijaa Corkin, Limerickin ja Galwayn yliopistoista.

Useat paikalla olleista tutkijoista olivat kiinnostuneita liittymään hankkeen yhteyteen ja osallistumaan seminaareihin ja hankkeen tiedotukseen.
Vierailuohjelmaan kuului muitakin tapaamisia laulajine ja tutkijoiden kanssa.

BRETAGNE 13.–17.5.2011
The purpose of the trip was to have serious and detailed negotiation about transnational project cooperation between LAG Ouest Cornouaille and LAG Living Kainuu, Runosong Academy and Dastum, Sommelo and Le Juch festival (and hopefully some Scottish and maybe Irish partners too). At the same timewith the negotiations,we gave somepresentations of runosong tradition (and its relation to Kalevala), and old forms of Finnish music. We also heared and experienced some exellent presentations of Brittanic song and tance tradition.
We were 5 people from Finland: Heikki Laitinen (emeritus professor of Sibelius-Academy, chairman of the scientific board of Runoaong Academy, musician), Taito Hoffrén (musician specialized on runosong, artistic leader of Sommelo), Arja Kastinen (DMus, musician specialized on kantele), Pekka Huttu-Hiltunen (Dmus, director of Runosong Academy) and Pirjo Heikkinen (LAG-manager of Living Kainuu Leader). Our interpreter and guide in Brittany was Kristina Kuusisto (bandoneonist, who lives in Loguivy Plougras, Brittany). So, we were 6 people all together.
Friday 13 evening (at 9 PM) : singing in a bar in Le Juch :no microphone, no program, with the trainees who have spent all the day with Yann-Fanch Kemener, a well -knowneton professionnal singer, who sang some "gwerz" from the Barzaz Breizh songbook, and maybe also some other songs. There were many exellent singers in the bar!

Saturday: A meeting with the Leader groups at 10-12. Introduction and presentation of each others. At this point the project plan seemed unclear yet.

At 2 30 PM, for one hour, we had lecture about Kalevala and finish songs, and – of course – about the EOST-project proposal.

In the evening, we had an opporturnity to learn brittanic dances. The songs and dances were exellent and interesting !

 Dancing in Le Juch on 14th May
Sunday 15.5.: we had a walking concert in the beautiful suraoundings of Le Juch. In the afternoon there was a concert in the chorch, where a local son and father presented their songs, we presented our Uroshämärä concert (Haikki laitinen, Taito Hoffrén and Pekka Huttu-Hiltunen and Arja Kastinen), and exellent Yann-Fanch Kemener together with Kristina Kuusisto and Arja Kastinen.
Monday 16 May : In the morning we had an important meeting in Quimper at Ti ar Vro, with other breton organisations working for preserving our traditional culture: language, dance, music…
In the afternoon: second round table meeting at Le Juch was successful. We agreed to continue with the project plan. Some details have to be still worked out, but most of the program is agreed.
In the early evening we had a meeting with local authorities and elected people who can be potential supports of the project: we mad presentation of our works and results of the meeting.
In the evening we went to the near town Douarnenez, and had a wonderful dinner in a restaurant near see.
We had an exiting and rewarding trip!
